In 1992, on a small college campus in Princeton, NJ a group of friends decided to form a union. This union consisted of the few Black and Hispanic students at Westminster Choir College. They came together with the hope to support each other through the academic and social challenges that troubled their unique conservatory college experience. Out of this group birthed BHA, The Black and Hispanic Alliance. Initially they designed it as a support group to enhance the social life of minorities, but what they didn’t know was how much bigger their mission would become.
Article II- Purpose
The purpose of this club is to have a support group for minorities of color especially those of the ethnic background black or African American and Hispanic or Hispanic American.
Over the past years, BHA has made added a goal to that original purpose, to spread the Black and Hispanic Culture throughout the Westminster Community. Providing such events as Latin Night, Holiday of Different Colors, Gospel Fest, and Open Mic Night. BHA has used these events to further entertain and educate the campus. In addition to many educational movie nights and discussions.
Below is an excerpt from the most recent, not yet ratified constitution:
The missions of the Black and Hispanic Alliance is to raise awareness of Black and Hispanic culture on the Princeton Campus of Rider University, and to provide students an outlet for cultural expression. Especially those of the ethnic background: black or African American and Hispanic or Hispanic American.
As you can see, the mission does not change. It simply continues to expand as BHA opens itself up to all students. It is first a support group for the minorities, but it offers chances for all Westminster students to experience and express their own cultural expressions. Being the only racially motivated, cultural group apart of the Student Government Association, BHA feels its obligation to play this role. While still being able to keep its first mission, it simply expands.
